ST. LOUIS (TCD) -- At least 3 people are dead and several others injured after a man reportedly opened fire at Central Visual & Performing Arts High School.
On Monday morning, St. Louis Police tweeted they were responding to an active shooter incident at the high school and that a suspect was taken into custody. About an hour after the initial tweet, police said the scene was no longer an ongoing and active threat.
St. Louis Police Chief Michael Sack said in a press conference that officers arrived "within a few minutes" after the first calls at around 9:10 a.m. As the students fled the school, they reportedly told officers there was a "shooter armed with a long gun."
Police reportedly heard gunfire and engaged with the suspect. The suspect, a male in his 20s, was struck and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to Sack, an adult female was pronounced dead at a hospital and a teenage female was killed at the school. Both died from apparent gunshot wounds.
Other victims who were injured reportedly suffered a "variety of injuries," ranging from trample wounds to gunshots. Sack said the community is "safe" and there is no apparent ongoing threat to the community.
St. Louis Police officers reportedly found what they believe is the suspect’s vehicle, and are searching it.
A math teacher at Central Visual & Performing Arts High School, David Williams, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the principal announced the active shooter code phrase, and the window in his classroom door was shot out. Williams allegedly heard the suspected shooter say, "You are all going to die," with an expletive in the sentence.
One 16-year-old student told the Post-Dispatch about hearing the gunfire, "I heard one big one, and then there were so many I stopped counting. I'm confused why people are so cruel."
