BRIGHTON, Colo. (TCD) -- The parents of a 1-year-old girl were recently charged after the child died as a result of ingesting fentanyl.
According to the Colorado 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office, the 1-year-old girl passed away on Jan. 2. The Adams County Coroner found that the "deceased child's blood post-mortem contained 10 times the amount of fentanyl necessary to kill an intolerant adult user," the District Attorney's Office says.
The parents, 31-year-old Alonzo Montoya and 30-year-old Nicole Casias, allegedly abused illegal drugs in the victim's presence at home. According to the District Attorney's Office, the parents participated in illicit drug activity prior to the child's death and after.
According to the District Attorney's Office, on Thursday, March 31, Casias and Montoya were charged with child abuse resulting in death and distribution of a controlled substance.
