SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (TCD) --
A Georgia babysitter has been charged with murder after a 2-year-old child in her care died at a hospital.
On Wednesday, Dec. 9, EMTs responded to a medical call of an unresponsive 2-year-old child at an apartment on Monterey Parkway, Sandy Springs Police said. The child was rushed to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy showed the girl "suffered severe injuries that resulted in her death during her care by the suspect," according to police.
Investigators said the child was in the care of her babysitter, 29-year-old Kirstie Flood. Flood was arrested and charged with two counts of felony murder; one count of malice murder; one count of aggravated battery; and one count of first-degree child cruelty.
WSB-TV reports that according to police, Flood first said the toddler hit her head on a slide at the park and didn't wake up. Doctors at Children's Healthcare determined her injuries were not consistent with Flood's story.
When police searched Flood's phone, a warrant says she had been searching things like “what type of people enjoy abusing other people's children” and “what does it mean to have a sudden urge to beat a child that's not yours.”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Flood had been the little girl's full-time babysitter since August.
Flood has been arrested multiple times in Cobb County since 2010, and spent 15 days in jail in 2013 for probation violations related to a drug charge.
