NEW MILFORD, Conn. (TCD) -- A 34-year-old man is in custody after allegedly killing his 56-year-old mother near a Connecticut park earlier this week.
On Monday, June 5, at around 8:25 a.m., a man identified as Eric Meagan called the New Milford Police Department and said he had "just killed his mother" near the Still River next to Harrybrooke Park on Still River Drive. Meagan reportedly stayed on the line with police for "several minutes," recounting the events leading up to his mother’s death. He also provided officers with his location near the river.
Officers responded to the scene, where they found Meagan’s mother, Victoria Palmer. She was transported to New Milford Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after. Police did not specify her cause of death.
Officers took Meagan into custody without incident, and he was booked into the New Milford Police Department on a charge of murder. He remains held on $2 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, June 6.
In a statement obtained by WFSB-TV, Bill Buckbee, the director for Harrybrooke Park, said, "Just a tragic moment for the park and for the family, and our hearts go out to the family. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place, and it’s just awful to have something like this happen."
