FRESNO, Calif. (TCD) -- A 15-year-old girl was allegedly shot Sunday night at a 16-year-old’s birthday party at an Airbnb rental that had no adults present.
According to the Fresno Bee, the shooting took place shortly before 9 p.m. at a residence on Vagedes Avenue. Officers reportedly located the victim with a gunshot wound on her upper torso. She was transported to the Community Regional Medical Center for surgery. Details on her condition have not been released. According to the Fresno Bee, a second juvenile victim endured injuries while trying to flee from gunfire.
KFSN-TV reports dispatchers received multiple calls from partygoers regarding the shooting. Neighbors and children reportedly ran out into the street. The suspects allegedly crashed their car into other cars and opened fire on the street.
Fresno police Lt. Paul Cervantes said in a statement to KFSN, "We appear to have some type of Airbnb rental that was rented for a minor. That birthday party was posted on social media and then the party got out of control."
Upon further investigation, Lt. Cervantes told the Fresno Bee that the shooting occurred when a group was asked to leave the adult-free birthday party, though police don’t know how many were in the group asked to leave nor how many shots were fired. The group reportedly fled the area via car after the shooting. They crashed into a parked vehicle before fleeing on foot, the Fresno Bee reports.
Lt. Cervantes added, "It was nothing short of a melee, it was chaotic, pandemonium. Individuals were fleeing on foot hopping fences, cars leaving the area crashing into parked vehicles."
The Fresno Bee reports a house and two parked vehicles were struck by bullets.
According to KFSN, Airbnb released a statement following the incident and condemned the "senseless gun violence."
The company wrote, "Airbnb bans parties, as well as the use of the platform by anyone under the age of 18 — and we have zero tolerance for anyone who attempts to circumvent such defenses. We have permanently banned this guest’s account from our platform and stand ready to support the Fresno Police Department in their investigation."
