PARK FOREST, Ill. (TCD) -- A 62-year-old man and his 57-year-old wife were arrested over the weekend after their young granddaughter died from abuse-related injuries.
In a statement, Park Forest Police said officers went to a residence on the 300 block of Osage Street on the evening of July 14 after receiving a call about an unresponsive 5-year-old girl. Officers and paramedics "immediately" performed CPR on the little girl and transported her to Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Hospital. Then, the girl, who police identified as Jada, was airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where she died July 15 at 9 p.m.
According to police, Jada’s grandfather Klent Elwoods allegedly "admitted to abusing Jada."
Elwoods and his wife, Lisa Jones, were arrested and taken to the police department for investigation. They both reportedly said they abused their granddaughter. Detectives shared their evidence with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on July 16, and both Elwoods and Jones were charged with first-degree murder.
Jada reportedly "exhibited signs of recent physical abuse as well as older indicators."
Their bond hearing is scheduled for July 17.
