VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (TCD) -- A 47-year-old man was arrested and charged after allegedly fatally shooting his ex-wife and her adult son while two young children were nearby.
According to a press conference held by Volusia County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brian Henderson, on Sunday, Sept. 18, deputies responded to East Parkway in DeLand after receiving a call at approximately 7:56 p.m. from Michael Williams. Williams reportedly told dispatchers he had shot two people inside the home.
Upon their arrival, Henderson said deputies found the two bodies with fatal gunshot wounds. The victims were reportedly identified as Michael Williams’ ex-wife, Marcia Williams, 48, and her son, Robert Adams, 28.
According to Henderson, Adams’ two young children, ages 6 and 5 years old, were inside the home at the time of the shooting.
Upon further investigation, Henderson said investigators learned Michael Williams got into an argument with Marcia Williams and Adams regarding the electricity in the house. The suspect was reportedly upset because he believed his ex-wife and her son were leaving the lights on.
Leading up to the argument and alleged shooting, Henderson said the suspect shut off the power to the home, locked the electrical panel, and left, but when he came back, the victims had cut the lock, restoring the power. He reportedly said he shot them in self-defense.
Michael Williams was arrested and booked into Volusia County Jail for two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, records show.
The suspect and his ex-wife were reportedly married for 10 years before getting divorced, and they do not share any children. After their divorce in June, the two were still living together in the same home, WESH-TV reports.
According to Henderson, the suspect has a criminal history, including alleged domestic violence, battery, and child abuse.
