OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (TCD) -- A 48-year-old man was arrested this week after he allegedly killed a co-worker while working at a GM plant in the off hours.
In the early hours of Thursday, Aug. 11, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed there was an "altercation between co-workers" at the General Motors Orion plant in which one person died and another was taken into custody. The Sheriff’s Office said there was "no active danger to the community or plant."
According to the Detroit Free Press, the victim was a 49-year-old man from Pontiac, Michigan, and said officials were withholding his identity until the autopsy. The victim and suspect reportedly both worked for a cleaning service contracted by GM and the two got into the fight a little after 1:30 a.m.
Oakland County Sheriff’s Office deputies reportedly found the victim "unconscious and bleeding" and attempted lifesaving measures on him, but he did not survive.
Officials reportedly recovered the "item used in the slaying," but did not specify what it was.
General Motors told WXYZ-TV in a statement, "General Motors is working with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department to investigate an altercation between two employees from a third-party service provider at Orion Assembly early Thursday morning. The incident resulted in the death of one of the individuals."
The statement continued, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family. In the meantime, GM has canceled Aug. 11 production at Orion Assembly. Additional details on the incident will be released by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department."
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is built at the Orion plant.
