LAKE CHARLES, La. (TCD) -- Deputies arrested a 47-year-old man this week on suspicion of killing his girlfriend's son and their family dog.
On Monday, Jan. 1, at around 4:30 a.m., the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report of a woman at a local hospital suffering from severe injuries. Investigators learned the woman's boyfriend, Derik Rayborn, allegedly killed her son and a dog at their home off Highway 90 East.
The woman reportedly told deputies she escaped the residence and went to the hospital for medical care.
The sheriff's office responded to the home and found 26-year-old Eric Bosley and the dog dead at the scene with apparent gunshot wounds. Deputies allege Rayborn also caused the woman's injuries.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Stitch Guillory told KPLC-TV that during a domestic dispute, the son "tried to defend his mom and that’s how he ended up as a victim."
Guillory also said the woman's injuries to her face are "beyond recognition," adding, "It’s unbelievable that one human being could do this to another human being."
The sheriff's office found Rayborn at the hospital as he was trying to locate his girlfriend.
Officials arrested Rayborn and booked him into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, domestic abuse causing serious bodily injury, aggravated cruelty to animals, interfering with emergency communication, possession or carrying of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies, and illegal use of a weapon during a crime of violence. His bond was set at $2,375,000.
As of Jan. 2, the woman remains hospitalized with critical injuries.
Prior to the incident, Rayborn was reportedly convicted of five felonies and went to prison.
The investigation is ongoing.
