RALEIGH, N.C. (TCD) -- A 15-year-old male is in custody after he allegedly opened fire Thursday evening and killed several people, including a police officer.
On Thursday, Oct. 13, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Raleigh Police announced there was an active shooting investigation in the Neuse River Greenway area.
During a press briefing Thursday evening, Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said five people were killed and two others were injured in the shooting that started at approximately 5 p.m. One of the fatalities included an off-duty Raleigh Police Department officer, and a K-9 officer was reportedly injured.
At 8 p.m., Raleigh Police reportedly said they had a suspect contained, and he was later taken into custody.
On Friday, Oct. 14, Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson provided additional details about the shooting. She identified the suspect as a 15-year-old white male and said he is in critical condition.
Patterson said during the press conference Friday, "My heart is heavy because we don’t have answers as to why this tragedy occurred."
She also called the shooting a "senseless gun crime."
The five deceased victims have been identified as 52-year-old Nicole Connors, 49-year-old Susan Karnatz, 35-year-old Mary Marshall, 29-year-old Raleigh Police officer Gabriel Torres, and a 16-year-old male. Fifty-nine-year-old Marcille Gardner was injured and is in critical condition.
Though Torres was off-duty at the time, he was reportedly "on his way to work" when the shooting occurred.
WTVD-TV identified the injured officer as Casey Joseph Clark. Patterson said he was released from the hospital after receiving treatment.
According to Patterson, the crime scene was "expansive" and extended for about two miles.
Patterson said officers engaged in a "long standoff" with the suspect before he was ultimately apprehended. It was not immediately clear if the suspect's injuries were self-inflicted or not.
The investigation remains ongoing.
