ARTESIA, N.M. (TCD) -- Officials announced charges this week against a 19-year-old mother who allegedly left her newborn to die in a hospital bathroom this year.
According to a news release from the Artesia Police Department, on Jan. 27 at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers responded to the Artesia General Hospital Emergency Room to a report of a deceased newborn. KRQE-TV reports the baby was found dead in a hospital bathroom trash can.
The newborn was transported to the Medical Investigator of New Mexico, and his death was ruled a homicide on March 28.
According to KRQE, the victim’s mother, Alexee Trevizo, initially went to the hospital in January for back pain when she discovered that she was pregnant. She allegedly locked herself in a bathroom and gave birth to a baby boy. Trevizo then reportedly tied the newborn in a bag and placed him underneath the bathroom trash can. As a result, KRQE reports he had died due to lack of oxygen by the time he was found.
Police presented the case against Trevizo to the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in March, and the criminal complaint was approved on Wednesday, May 10.
Police arrested Trevizo on charges of first-degree murder or alternatively abuse of a child –– intentional, resulting in death and tampering with evidence.
