HOUSTON (TCD) -- A 60-year-old man faces murder charges after he was allegedly found carrying a box with a woman’s dead body inside.
According to a news release from the Houston Police Department, on Sunday, April 17, patrol officers responded to the 7000 block of Bissonnet Street at around 2:45 p.m. to a report of a suspicious package. At the scene, authorities found Flor Aidee Vega’s body in a box, KPRC-TV reports.
Her body was reportedly found covered in plastic wrap and green fitted sheets. She had sustained lacerations and wounds to her face consistent with being cut with a machete or ax, along with broken facial bones, KPRC reports.
A resident of the apartment complex allegedly discovered the box in the building’s parking lot.
Initially, police say they learned Miguel Moreno "took the box out of his apartment and wheeled it through the complex in a hand cart." He was reportedly arrested and charged with tampering with evidence.
According to KPRC, upon further investigation, Moreno’s charges were upgraded to murder. Court documents obtained by KPRC allege Moreno hit Vega with a blunt object, killing her.
Investigators allegedly conducted a search warrant and found blood droplets and a mattress full of biological material wrapped in plastic wrap and sheets consistent with what was found on Vega’s body.
Additionally, recovered surveillance video reportedly showed Moreno carrying a U-Haul box on a dolly.
During an interview, Moreno said he hadn’t been in the apartment recently, and he told authorities someone broke into his home and left the U-Haul box there, KPRC reports.
Police did not disclose Moreno’s relationship to Vega.
Moreno remains held in Harris County Jail Facility on $500,000 bond, and he is scheduled to appear in court May 20, records show.
