WARRENSBURG, Mo. (TCD) -- A 34-year-old man and 29-year-old woman face child abuse and child endangerment charges after children were found to be living in a feces-covered room and unsanitary conditions.
According to court records cited by WDAF-TV, on Tuesday, April 7, officers from the Warrensburg Police Department went to a residence near South Mitchell Street and Cedar Drive after receiving a report about a child running naked in the street. Officers reportedly heard someone yelling profanities and saw two children peek out from behind a window covering.
WDAF reports the children, ages 3 and 5, appeared unclean. Suspect Donald Robinson reportedly spoke with officers at the front door, who allegedly saw a dirty mattress and trash on the floor. Officers stepped inside the residence to check on the children’s safety, and reportedly noticed the kids had marks and dried feces on their bodies. One child reportedly tried eating spoiled food off the floor.
While officers searched the premises, they reportedly discovered soiled diapers, trash, feces on the floor, and a lack of furniture and food. The children and Robinson reportedly all slept in the same room, and officers noted it smelled like urine and feces.
Marissa Jones came back to the apartment while officers were still there and reportedly admitted to police the living conditions were subpar for the children.
Detectives went to the residence at a later time and reportedly noted the trash that was once on the floor was instead piled in bags in the kitchen. They also saw one child try to eat a stick.
Johnson County Jail records show Robinson has been charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk, two counts of abuse or neglect of a child, and tampering with physical evidence.
Jones faces charges of four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of abuse or neglect of a child.
