2 million dimes stolen from truck left in Philadelphia Walmart parking lot overnight

PHILADELPHIA (TCD) -- Robbers got away with $200,000 worth of dimes early Thursday morning after stealing from a truck that had been left in a parking lot.
On Thursday, April 13, Philadelphia Police said officers responded to the Walmart on Byberry Road at 6:06 a.m. for a report that an unmarked trailer was broken into overnight. Police said the trailer contained $750,000 worth of dimes, and it was unknown at the time how many coins were actually taken.
In the statement, Philadelphia Police said the dimes were "scattered from parking lot to Woodhaven Road."
According to WPVI-TV, police believe the suspected thieves took 1 million dimes from the truck, which equates to $100,000. NBC Philadelphia reported Friday, April 14, that investigators now believe the robbers took $200,000 worth of dimes.
WPVI reports the truck driver left the vehicle in the parking lot because he wanted to sleep before driving the money from Philadelphia to Florida. He reportedly picked up the coins from the Philadelphia Mint Wednesday.
Photos shared on Twitter show dozens of coins scattered on the ground next to the large truck. Capt. Jason Smith told CBS Philadelphia, "There’s been a lot of cargo thefts here and there in Northeast Philly and South Philadelphia over the ensuing months where we've had lamb, chicken, TVs, refrigerators, etc. taken."
