Houston man sentenced to almost 60 years for beating man to death after 'minor fender bender'

HOUSTON (TCD) -- A judge sentenced a 26-year-old man to nearly six decades in prison for beating and paralyzing a man after a car accident, causing the victim to later die from his injuries.
In a statement, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office announced Treyivion Shaquille Ross was sentenced to 58 years in prison for killing 56-year-old David Ray Young in 2020.
Ross was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer he had recently bought when he pulled out of a gas station parking lot and collided with Young. The two men got out of their cars to share information, but then Ross punched Young in the face. Young became unconscious, and Ross "continued to pummel him and then stomped and kicked the helpless man, paralyzing him from the neck down."
Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported Young to a nearby hospital. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office said Young became a quadriplegic following the incident and was being cared for by his "elderly mother." Young remained in a wheelchair until his death on Nov. 28, 2022. He reportedly died from "complications from his injuries."
Ross and Young did not know each other prior to the incident.
Ross was arrested in March on a murder charge. Court records show he was convicted in July and his attorneys filed an appeal.
He is required to serve 29 years before he is eligible for parole.
