PAPILLION, Neb. (TCD) -- A 56-year-old man faces felony charges two months after over 600 animals were removed from his home after living in "deplorable conditions."
According to WOWT-TV, Edward Luben of Papillion faces seven felony charges and five misdemeanor charges for cruel neglect of animals. Officials reportedly removed 665 animals from Luben’s home in December, 70 of which were dead. The Sarpy County Attorney’s Office said in a statement cited by WOWT that two other animals had to be put down "due to the extent of their injuries."
A Nebraska Humane Society spokeswoman told WOWT in December that the animals included rabbits, lizards, guinea pigs, birds, and reptiles.
She told WOWT, "The conditions were extremely unsanitary, [with] feces and urine throughout the house. Many animals did not have food or water. There were also some deceased animals in the home."
The Deputy Sarpy County Attorney said in a statement cited by the Omaha World-Herald, "These animals were living in deplorable conditions. Many of them were severely malnourished or had physical impairments due to their living conditions. The fact that so many of the animals survived is a testament to the Nebraska Humane Society’s work."
The Omaha World-Herald reports Luben was booked into the Sarpy County Jail and released Thursday after posting bond.
