ELYRIA, Ohio (TCD) -- A 16-year-old and an 18-year-old were recently arrested and charged in connection with the September shooting death of a 14-year-old boy.
According to a news release from the Elyria Police Department, Shayne Edwards was fatally shot on Sept. 12. At around 5 a.m., police responded to a home on 3rd Street, where they located the deceased victim in his bed, WJW-TV reports. Gunshots were reportedly fired at the family’s residence.
At the time of the shooting, there were allegedly five people inside the home, and it is unknown if the victim was the intended target.
Upon further investigation, police identified 18-year-old Jose Campos and 16-year-old Hezekiah Shepherd as suspects. On Oct. 14, police said the two were both arrested.
Shepherd was reportedly booked into the Lorain County Juvenile Detention Home and charged with murder, felonious assault, discharging firearms at or into a habitation, discharging firearms on or over a premises, and tampering with evidence.
According to police, Campos was charged with complicity of murder and felonious assault. Campos’ bond was reportedly set at $50,000 for each count, and he was eventually released after posting.
Because Shepherd is under 18 years old, police did not release his photo.
In a statement, Mayor Frank Whitfield said, "We are committed to fighting gun violence and will continue to work with the City of Lorain, Shayne’s family and other victims of gun violence, and our community to address this plague in our society."
