CHICAGO (TCD) -- A 29-year-old woman who frequently spoke out about her divorce was found dead recently in a suspected murder-suicide involving her husband.
According to WGN-TV, on July 18, Chicago Police officers conducted a welfare check at a residence on the 200 block of East Ohio Street and found two people unresponsive. A 29-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 36-year-old male was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Both victims had reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
WGN later identified the victims as Sania Khan and her husband Raheel Ahmed. Police reportedly believe Ahmed shot Khan before killing himself. Investigators allegedly found a gun in his hand and a suicide note.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Ahmed’s family called police in Alpharetta, Georgia, because they were worried about him. Police in Alpharetta reportedly contacted Chicago Police to conduct the welfare check. A police report cited by the Chicago Sun-Times reportedly says the officer noted Ahmed and Khan were "going through a divorce" and Ahmed was traveling to Chicago to "salvage the marriage."
Some of Khan’s friends told the Chicago Sun-Times that Khan and Ahmed’s divorce had already been finalized.
Officers reportedly heard gunshots from the residence as they knocked on the door.
Khan, who worked as a photographer, reportedly discussed her divorce openly on TikTok. According to ABC News, she talked about the stigma South Asian women face when getting a divorce, saying, "Going through a divorce as a South Asian Woman feels like you failed at life sometimes."
She reportedly added, "The way the community labels you, the lack of emotional support you receive, and the pressure to stay with someone because 'What will people say?' is isolating. It makes it harder for women to leave marriages that they shouldn’t have been in to begin with."
ABC News reports the Cook County Coroner’s Office determined Khan’s manner of death was homicide and Ahmed’s was suicide.
