THE BRONX, N.Y. (TCD) -- A 17-year-old was taken into custody after allegedly opening fire on a street corner, killing one 16-year-old and injuring two others.
New York Police Department Deputy Chief Timothy McCormack said in a press conference Friday, April 8, that someone called 911 at approximately 1:42 p.m. to report shots fired and people shot.
McCormack said the suspect was standing on the southeast corner of 156 Street and St. Ann’s Avenue "gesturing to somebody" on the opposite corner, the southwest side. The gesturing reportedly continued, and the suspect "pulls out a firearm and discharges his firearm in the westbound direction."
The three victims — two 16-year-old females and one 17-year-old male — were reportedly walking down the south side of 156 Street when they were all struck by gunfire. One 16-year-old, who was identified as Angellyh Yambo, was shot in the chest and transported to a nearby hospital. She was pronounced dead at 2:14 p.m.
The other female victim was reportedly shot in the shin, and the male victim in the buttocks. Their names were not released.
On Saturday, April 9, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced 17-year-old Jeremiah Ryan was arrested in connection with the case. He was charged with murder, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.
According to WPIX-TV, Yambo was a star student in her first year at University Prep Charter High School who received straight A’s. The other two victims did not attend the same high school. NBC New York reports the three victims did not know each other.
The "gesturing" that McCormack referred to in his press conference is reportedly "consistent with gang affiliation," according to NBC New York. Ryan, the suspect, allegedly used a ghost gun in the shooting. Ryan reportedly had "zero police contact" prior to the shooting.
