DAVIS, Calif. (TCD) -- A homicide investigation is underway after officials found the body of a 50-year-old man known in his community as the "compassion guy."
According to the Davis Police Department, on Thursday, April 27, at approximately 11:20 a.m., officers responded to Central Park in downtown Davis to a report of an unresponsive man, where they found the victim deceased. Police said the man suffered a "significantly violent attack" and sustained multiple stab wounds.
In a statement released by the Davis City Council, city manager, and Davis Police chief, officials said the Yolo County Coroner positively identified the victim as David Breaux on April 28. The statement said Breaux was a "well-known community member," and had been a "regular fixture in the downtown area and at Central Park for at least the last decade."
Davis Mayor Will Arnold said, "The death of David Breaux is utterly and completely devastating. Many of us knew David. We talked with him. We shared his vision for a kind world. We connected on what it means to be human and humane. David was gentle and kind, soft-spoken and thoughtful, brilliant and selfless. He will be missed."
Prior to his death, Breaux, a Stanford University graduate, released the book "Compassion: Davis, CA," a compilation of over 3,000 definitions of compassion from interviews Breaux conducted in Davis.
Police have asked anyone with information regarding Breaux’s death to come forward. The investigation is ongoing.
