PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (TCD) -- A 33-year-old man was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of killing his girlfriend and her 5-year-old daughter by driving into oncoming traffic during an argument.
On Wednesday, April 5, at 6:36 p.m., the Prince William County Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit responded to Dumfries Road and Fortuna Center Plaza regarding a double traffic fatality. Investigators learned that a 2007 Chrysler 300 was driving northbound when it crossed into opposing traffic and hit a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban. Police said the force of the crash was so strong it "caused both vehicles to rotate with the Chrysler 300 running off the roadway, and onto a sidewalk, while the Suburban came to rest facing southbound traffic."
No other vehicles were involved in the collision.
Prince William County Police said a male was transported to a nearby hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. A 33-year-old adult female was taken to the hospital and died from her injuries the same day, while her 5-year-old daughter died the next day. The Chevy Suburban driver reportedly also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
NBC Washington identified the victims as Dorothy Fontain and her daughter, Empress Fontain. The girl reportedly just celebrated her fifth birthday.
In an update, Prince William County Police said they arrested the driver, Mustafa Nofel Aljazairi, on two counts of manslaughter and one count of malicious wounding. Police said neither Aljazairi nor Dorothy Fontain was wearing a seatbelt, and Empress was reportedly "not properly restrained" either. The victim in the other car had her seatbelt on, police said.
Police allege Aljazairi and Dorothy were in the middle of a "verbal altercation" when he sped into oncoming traffic.
According to NBC Washington, Fontain was the mother of six children, four of whom lived with her in Woodbridge, Virginia.
Aljazairi is being held without bond.
