LAS VEGAS (TCD) -- A 30-year-old man was arrested after allegedly running over a suicidal woman and fleeing the scene.
According to a press release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, on Wednesday, June 1, at approximately 2:25 a.m., officers responded to a fatal traffic collision on South Jones Boulevard south of West University Avenue. At the scene, authorities discovered a 22-year-old woman, Emnet Asmamaw, who had been fatally hit by a Ford Mustang, KLAS-TV reports.
Asmamaw was reportedly beyond resuscitation and was pronounced dead.
According to an arrest report obtained by KLAS, Asmamaw was fighting with her boyfriend, made suicidal comments, and laid down on the road. A witness driver allegedly saw someone in the roadway waving their arms and swerved but "looked to his left to witness the Mustang run over the person lying in the roadway."
Asmamaw’s legs could allegedly be seen underneath Christopher Bustillos’ car. Bustillos stopped, and the witness and Bustillos reportedly tried to lift the Mustang off the victim but failed. According to KLAS, the witness told police he grabbed a tool from his car to help lift the Mustang, but when he came back, Bustillos fled the scene.
The arrest report said, "The Mustang proceeded south on Jones. It traveled approximately 750 feet before depositing Emnet Asmamaw on the roadway."
Approximately 20 minutes later, KLAS reports Bustillos was arrested during a traffic stop on the 215 freeway. The arrest report obtained by KLAS alleges Bustillos had "bloodshot, watery eyes and a moderate smell of an unknown alcohol emitting from his breath."
According to police, Bustillos was booked into the Clark County Detention Center for DUI and hit and run. Bustillos’ bail was reportedly set at $75,000.
