LAS VEGAS, N.M. (TCD) --
A New Mexico man was arrested after allegedly shooting at police officers and live-streaming a murder on Sunday, Nov. 8.
San Miguel County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of an armed man in a residence located on Peggy Lee Lane in Las Vegas, New Mexico, about 3 p.m. Sunday. The subject, described as "irate," was identified as 23-year-old Alejandro Alirez.
Alirez reportedly barricaded himself inside the residence when deputies arrived, and fired multiple rounds at the approaching deputies, according to New Mexico State Police. A patrol unit was struck by gunfire as deputies took cover.
Las Vegas Police officers and the New Mexico State Police Tactical Team and Crisis Negotiation Team also arrived on the scene. Investigators discovered Alirez was live-streaming the incident on Facebook Live. Two other individuals were determined to be inside the house with Alirez.
Officers observed Alirez walking around inside, and watched him subsequently shoot a woman in the house with him, according to police.
New Mexico State Police crisis negotiators made phone contact with Alirez and convinced him to walk out of the residence through the back door and surrender peacefully. Alirez was taken into custody without further incident, police said.
Officers searching the house found two victims shot dead, identified as 33-year-old Cristal Cervantes and 89-year-old Victor Cervantes, both of whom lived in the house.
State Police have obtained a search warrant to review the live-stream on Facebook.
Alejandro Alirez was charged with two counts of first-degree murder; four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer; and shooting in an inhabited/occupied building.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that according to police investigators, he claimed his girlfriend and her grandfather were raping children, and he wanted people to know. He also told police he had purchased a gun so he could kill his nieces and nephews, and at one point said he was mad at his sisters because they had not killed their children.
When interviewed by State Police, Alirez said that Cristal Cervantes was allowing people to come into the residence and have sex with him while he was asleep, the Albuquerque Journal reports. He also said that children were being molested and that he needed to save them. According to the Journal, Alirez's Facebook page shows that around the time of the shooting, he posted a message saying “So the fbis molesting everyone's kids kill your family members.”
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports Alirez told officers he had purchased a .45-caliber Hi-Point pistol the week before that he intended to use to kill his nieces and nephews.
