COLUMBUS, Ohio (TCD) -- A 44-year-old mother was arrested this week for allegedly shooting and killing her son after attempting to stab him.
On Feb. 19, at 1:45 p.m. Columbus Division of Police officers responded to a shooting call on the 2800 block of Drew Heights Place and found Jahaad Hughes unresponsive on the ground when they arrived. Medics transported Hughes to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 3:03 p.m.
Columbus Police said they "immediately" took Hughes' mother, Laquandra Williams, into custody on suspicion of murder. The shooting is believed to have stemmed from a domestic dispute.
According to court documents cited by WBNS-TV, before the shooting, Williams allegedly attempted to stab her son, but witnesses intervened. Hughes reportedly grabbed the knife from her.
Williams allegedly told Hughes, "I’m going to show you something," then walked to her car. Witnesses reportedly locked Williams out as Hughes packed some of his personal belongings. As Hughes was getting ready to leave, Williams reportedly shot him at close range.
She is currently being held at the Fairfield County Jail.
