BATON ROUGE, La. (TCD) -- Twelve people were shot and injured in what police believe was a "targeted attack" at a nightclub over the weekend.
According to Baton Rouge Police Chief L'Jean McKneely Jr., on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 1:36 a.m., officers received a call about a shooting at the Dior nightclub located at 4619 Bennington Avenue. Three Baton Rouge Police Department officers were reportedly in the club's parking lot and "immediately" responded. Those officers administered aid until EMS and fire department officials arrived.
McKneely said a dozen club goers were injured in the shooting, and he believes the swift response "prevented further injuries."
Lt. Bryan Ballard, Commander of the Homicide Division, said nine of the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while three people had wounds that were "life-threatening in nature."
The gunman allegedly did not walk in the club and immediately start shooting.
Ballard said, "This was not just a random act of someone showing up and randomly shooting citizens of Baton Rouge."
Police have not arrested a suspect yet.
The shooting occurred less than 24 hours after 10 people were fatally shot at a dance hall in Monterey Park, California.
