16-year-old fatally stabbed in D.C. during fight about McDonald’s sweet and sour sauce

WASHINGTON (TCD) -- A 16-year-old was arrested over the weekend for allegedly stabbing and killing another teen during a fight at a McDonald’s that started over sauces.
On Sunday, Aug. 27, at 2:10 a.m., Metropolitan D.C. Police officers responded to a local hospital after receiving a call about a juvenile with stab wounds. The victim, who police identified as 16-year-old Naima Liggon, passed away at the hospital from her injuries. Police began investigating and concluded Liggon was stabbed outside a restaurant on the 1900 block of 14th Street NW.
Liggon was reportedly driven to the hospital in a private vehicle and not an ambulance.
Police located the suspect and said she was "found to be in possession of a knife." They arrested her on a charge of second-degree murder while armed.
According to WTOP-TV, Liggon, the suspect, and other friends commuted into D.C. from their hometown in Maryland for a party and later stopped at the McDonald’s on U and 14th Street NW. A Metro Police detective testified at juvenile court that an argument broke out inside the car about sweet and sour sauce. The suspect and Liggon reportedly got out of the car, and the suspect stabbed her in the abdomen and chest.
The teen suspect’s defense attorney reportedly argued the girl stabbed Liggon in self-defense because Liggon and another teen beat her up.
The judge reportedly accepted the prosecutor’s charges of second-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault while armed, felony assault, possession of a prohibited weapon, and carrying a dangerous weapon.
WUSA-TV reports Liggon’s family wrote in a statement, "Naima was a beautiful, smart, funny, and unique young lady who loved life. She was loved and admired by so many people. Naima loved music and the arts, basketball, and she was shaping up to be a master barber. She had just been hired to work at Krispy Kreme as a doughnut specialist and was preparing to get her driver’s license."
The statement continued, "The impact of this senseless loss has affected our family, our friends, and our community. Naima will never see her prom or her graduation. We will not get to see her graduate from college or get married or have kids."
Her family urged others to "love on your kids" and to "Make sure they know they are loved when they walk out your door. Because you never know if that may be the last time you see them."
WTOP reports the suspect will remain in the D.C. Youth Services Center until her detention status hearing Sept. 1.
