CHESTER, Ill. -- (WGN) -- Drew Peterson is now an inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind., a spokesperson with the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed Tuesday.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons' Jill Tyson confirmed Peterson was transferred to federal custody. Terre Haute is a high-security facility for male inmates.
Although it's still unclear why, the Will County State's Attorney's office tells us that move from state custody in Illinois to federal custody in Indiana, has nothing to do with the investigations of his missing wife Stacey Peterson or the investigation into his attempt to hire a hitman to murder Attorney James Glasgow.
The Illinois Department of Corrections previously told WGN Investigates that Drew Peterson was no longer in its custody. IDOC spokeswoman Nicole Wilson released the following statement:
"Drew Peterson has been transferred out of IDOC custody. For safety and security purposes, the IDOC does not discuss details concerning the placement of offenders who are transferred under the terms of the Interstate Compact Agreement."
Steve Greenberg, Drew Peterson's attorney, said that Peterson has not been charged federally and is not facing any new state charges. Greenberg said he was not notified about the move and was as "befuddled as anybody" when he learned of the news from a reporter.
Drew Peterson was serving a 38-year sentence at the Menard Correctional Center in downstate Illinois for the murder of his third wife Kathleen Savio.
Last year, Peterson was also convicted of plotting to murder the prosecutor who put him in prison, Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow. That conviction carries with it an additional 40-year prison term.
The disappearance of Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, remains unsolved.
