SHREVEPORT, La. (TCD) -- A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Texas and taken back to Louisiana over the weekend after she allegedly threw two of her children into Cross Lake, killing one and injuring the other.
The Shreveport Police Department wrote in a probable cause statement that officers responded to Cross Lake on Friday regarding an "infant in the water." Officers reportedly found the infant dead and rescued another child from the water.
According to a video by KSLA-TV, a Shreveport Police Department spokeswoman said Friday the second child was transported to Ochsner LSU Health Center with life-threatening injuries. KSLA reports the boy’s injuries are no longer considered life-threatening and he is expected to recover.
Shreveport Police Department Sgt. Angie Wilhite said investigators initially believed there might be a third child in the water but learned that the child was elsewhere.
Ureka Black was reportedly stopped at the Texas-Louisiana state line and taken into custody in Texas, KSLA reports. She was then extradited to Shreveport and booked on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
According to KTBS-TV, the deceased child was 8 months old and the injured child is 5.
Officers believe Black allegedly threw the children from one of the bridges on the lake, but they were not sure which one as of Friday. Wilhite said she did not believe this was a random act.
KTBS reports Black had previously been charged with prostitution and aggravated arson.
