JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (TCD) -- A 31-year-old mother was arrested Monday after a 1-year-old baby ingested her drugs on Monday.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 6400 block of Avenue D in Fairfield after receiving a call from a woman screaming that a baby had overdosed. Upon arrival, deputies reportedly found the infant on the floor and unresponsive.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says witnesses told authorities the child had been unresponsive for about 30 minutes after ingesting "illegal drugs, possibly fentanyl."
Deputies immediately administered Narcan to the little girl to resuscitate her. She "began to breathe slowly" after receiving it. The 1-year-old was brought to the hospital via ambulance and is reportedly in stable condition.
Bodycam footage of the incident shows Deputy Jordan Agee working to save the baby.
Agee told WBRC-TV, "We were just worried about getting the baby back breathing."
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the mother, 31-year-old Jeanette Lashay Bell, admitted that her baby "had accessed some of her drug paraphernalia and ingested it by putting it in her mouth."
The Department of Human Resources conducted a welfare check on the other children in the house. Bell was arrested and charged with chemical endangerment of a child. She is being held on a $15,000 bond.
