TINLEY PARK, Ill. (TCD) -- A 42-year-old man faces murder charges for allegedly beating his teenage daughter to death in their home.
On Sunday, May 1, Tinley Park Police responded at around 5 p.m. to a home on the 7800 block of West 167th Street for a possible death investigation. When they arrived, officers reportedly found a 17-year-old female deceased.
In a follow-up statement, Tinley Park Police said the victim’s father Mohammed Almaru was at the home with "self-inflicted wounds to his wrist and throat." He had reportedly ingested pills and was transported to Christ Hospital. Tinley Park Police identified the victim as Mia Maro. Her death was ruled a homicide as result of multiple injuries.
Tinley Park Police Chief Matthew Walsh said in a press conference Almaru reportedly took "several narcotics" and has been "in and out" of consciousness. He is not cooperating with police, but Walsh said he has been charged with first-degree murder even though he is still in the hospital.
According to court documents cited by NBC Chicago, Almaru allegedly texted one of his sons a photo of himself holding a letter that said he "lost my mind, went out of control, and beat the s--t out of her."
Almaru allegedly believed his daughter was "hiding things from him" and he beat her in order to get the truth.
Investigators reportedly discovered a rubber mallet and pole that Almaru allegedly used.
In the days leading up to her death, Maro reportedly texted one of her aunts she was worried her father was going to "beat her a--" because she rear-ended someone in his car, according to WGN-TV. She also reportedly texted saying she worried Almaru was "going to kill her."
Almaru had reportedly given Maro permission to attend her high school’s prom on April 29 and picked out the dress she would wear, but he reportedly changed his mind the day before.
According to WGN, one of Mia’s aunts, Linda Maro, used her Find My iPhone app to check if Mia went to prom in Chicago. Mia’s whereabouts, however, showed she was not in the city.
On April 30, the day after prom, Linda texted Mia, but she did not respond. Mia’s mom reportedly suffered a medical emergency in 2019 and requires constant attention. Mia was scheduled to care for her mom April 30, and she did not respond to texts again the next day.
Linda and her sister Randa Almaru went to Mia’s house to check on her May 1. Randa reportedly went into her brother’s bedroom and found Maro on the floor and Mohammed lying down with his arm over her.
