BURNSVILLE, Minn. (TCN) -- A 58-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally stabbing and dismembering his elderly mother after spending all of her money.
The Dakota County Attorney's Office announced Aug. 19 that a judge sentenced Troy Mitteness to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A jury previously convicted him of premeditated first-degree murder and intentional second-degree murder in connection with the death and dismemberment of 82-year-old Sandra Mitteness.
Troy Mitteness reportedly told Burnsville Police that he stabbed his mother in his residence in June 2022 after he "spent all of her money," and she became suspicious. Prosecutors said Mitteness dismembered the victim days after her death and placed her body parts in plastic totes. He then reportedly drove to Appleton and scattered her remains into ditches along the road.
Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena said, "I want to extend my gratitude to everyone involved in this case, particularly the jurors who were exposed to and had to consider some very grisly facts. I'm deeply appreciative of your verdict and hard work throughout the trial."
