Several injured after student opens fire at Texas high school; suspect in custody

ARLINGTON, Texas (TCD) -- An 18-year-old male who police say opened fire at a school following a fight with another student is now in custody.

The Arlington Police Department announced Wednesday afternoon, "The suspect has been taken into custody without incident and charged with multiple counts of Aggravated Assault with a gun.  Most students have been safely evacuated from Timberview High School. Thank you for everyone’s help."

Arlington Police Department Assistant Police Chief Kevin Kolbye told CNN one victim was out of surgery and another victim did not require surgery and was in a "good position." The third victim is reportedly expected to be released from the hospital.

Arlington Police tweeted Wednesday morning that they were on scene at Timberview High School in response to reports of a shooting. They identified the suspect as Timothy George Simpkins. He is reported to be driving a silver Dodge Charger with the license plate PFY-6260.

Police reportedly believe Simpkins is no longer on the premises.

According to KDFW-TV, three people were taken to the hospital, two of whom had gunshot wounds. A teacher who was pregnant reportedly fell but was treated at the scene.

CNN reports Mansfield Police Chief Tracy Aaron said Simpkins should be considered armed and dangerous.

Kolbye said they believe the incident occurred when there was a fight between Simpkins and another individual in a classroom. A gun was used, and they believe three of the victims are students, according to CNN.

Kolbye said the shooting was "not a random act of violence."

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was on the scene assisting in the investigation.
