KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (TCD) -- Officials arrested a 36-year-old man this week after he allegedly fatally shot his friend during a dispute.
According to a news release from the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, on Thursday, March 21, shortly before 1 p.m., deputies responded to a home on Crystal Lane, where a resident had reported that a family member had been shot by a man who goes by the name of Batman. The suspect fled the scene by the time the resident called 911. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, 33-year-old Jonathan Yancey, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
Witnesses identified the suspect as 36-year-old Cody Helms, who is reportedly one of Yancey's friends. The two reportedly got into an argument moments before the fatal shooting.
A Kannapolis Police officer located Helms approximately one mile from the scene not long after the incident.
Helms was arrested on a charge of murder and booked into the Rowan County Jail. He remains held as he awaits his first court appearance.
